Royal Wedding II

2011

The Royal Wedding of HRH Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton in 2011 was a monumental occasion. The viewing figures broke many records and the Royal Australian Mint were honoured to produce this commemorative coin. The reverse was designed by RAM and shows an effigy of the happy couple with a circled rose at the base. It includes the legend"MISS CATHERINE MIDDLETON - HRH PRINCE WILLIAM". The obverse features an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing and crowned. The legend reads "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2011".

The Wedding of HRH Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton took place at the traditional venue, Westminster Abbey in London. The date was the 29th April 2011 and it was declared a public holiday in the UK. Over one million people lined the route from Westminster Abbey right through to Buckingham Palace. It seemed the whole world was watching as media coverage was completely global with over 180 countries broadcasting a live feed. In the USA, the Empire State Building was lit in red, white and blue to honour the occasion. Street parties up and down the UK took place. On the morning of the wedding, the title was bestowed upon them in traditional manner and were named the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Despite the long courtship of eight years, during which the bride was labelled as Waitey Katey, they had finally made their vows and won the hearts of the British public and indeed so many people around the world.
