Australia Day

This Australia Day piece commemorates the monumental day of Australia's birth. Despite the differing meanings of this day to different people, it remains one of the most celebrated days on the Australian calendar. The original meaning of Australia Day is to celebrate the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet and the planting of the British Flag in Sydney Cove, New South Wales by the new governor. The reverse was designed by Vladimir Gottwald and shows his impression of people joining together with ribbons. This surrounds the denomination 50 in the centre of the coin. It includes the legend CELEBRATE WHAT'S GREAT AUSTRALIA DAY. The obverse features an Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, right-facing and crowned. The legend reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2010 . It was presented in a blue case as shown below.

Australia Day 2010

Australia Day is a significant day in the Australian people's calendar. Not least because it allows its people to celebrate the colonisation of the land, but also combine it with everything Australian. The Australian of the Year is awarded on the day prior to Australia Day which is commonly referred to as Australia Day Eve. There is also an Australia Day Honours List as well as the usual address from the Australian Prime Minister and the Governor General. The 26th of January each year is also a time when Australian Citizenship Affirmation Ceremonies take place. The first one ever was back in 1999 at Galston Park in New South Wales. Since then it has become an increasingly popular event and it is actively encouraged by the Australian Government. They are now an integral part of Australia Day and it gives the locals the opportunity to welcome the new citizen into their neighbourhood. As the caption on the coin suggests, Australia Day is a time to celebrate all that's great about the country. A time to re-affirm peoples intentions to make the country even greater that it is already. The celebrations take many forms including firework displays, family gatherings or an organised local event. It is also a time to celebrate all that's great about being an Australian as well as welcoming new Australian citizens. It is estimated the half of the 21 million Australians will participate in an event of some sort at this time.
