After the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in late 1952, the obverse of the Threepence series was changed to Mary Gillick's effigy of Her Majesty, with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA (Elizabeth II, by the grace of god, queen). This first type was issued only in 1953 and 1954 before the legend was altered to read ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D (Elizabeth II, by the grace of god, queen, defender of the faith). The series continued to be struck until the introduction of decimal currency. Across both types the reverse remained Kruger Gray's wheat stalk design.
