1952 Sixpence

George VI

Australia

The 1952 Sixpence was the final year in the George VI series as His Majesty died on the 6th of February 1952. The year is a semi-key date in the series and was produced at the Melbourne Mint to a total mintage of 2,112,000. This was the lowest mintage of the second George VI type and was low within the larger series. As a result the type is quite scarce with mint-state examples often demanding prices around ten-fold higher than similar years.

The death of His Majesty, King George VI was a shock to the world. He was born on the 14th of December 1895 as Albert, the second son of King George V. It was expected that Albert's older brother Edward VII would inherit the throne. At the outbreak of WWI Albert served extensively in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. In 1936 Albert's father King George V passed away and Albert's eldest brother Edward VIII became King. That same year King Edward abdicated his position as King in order to marry a divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. Albert, as next in line, inherited the throne and was crowned as King George VI. Throughout World War II King George VI visited several battle fronts and created the George Cross for acts of heroism. On the 6th of February 1952 His Majesty died of a coronary thrombosis after a few years of deteriorating health including the development of and major surgery for lung cancer.(The Royal Family, 2017)
