George VI

1937 - 52

In 1937 the shilling series was altered to feature Kruger Gray's reverse design which features a central ram with AUSTRALIA at the top and SHILLING followed by the year of issue at the bottom. This was also the first year of King George VI reign, the obverse featured the uncrowned bust of King George VI facing to the left with the legend GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP ('George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India'), which was used up until 1948 when the legend was altered to read GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX FIDEI DEF ('George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith'). This second type continued until the end of George VI's reign in 1952.
