Elizabeth II

1953 - 63

After the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in late 1952, the shilling series obverse design changed to the bust of Elizabeth II facing to the right with the legend, ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA ('Elizabeth II, by the grace of god, queen'), designed by Mary Gillick. This legend used used in 1953 and 1954 before being reworded in 1955 to read ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D ('Elizabeth II, by the grace of god, queen, defender of the faith'). Throughout both of these types the reverse design remained Kruger Gray's iconic Rams head with AUSTRALIA at the top and SHILLING at the bottom.
