After the coronation of King George VI in late 1936 the obverse of the Penny series was changed to feature the uncrowned bust of His Majesty facing to the left with the legend GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP ('George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India'). The reverse also changed to feature Kruger Gray's iconic bounding kangaroo design. This first type was issued between 1938 and 1948 when India gained independence and the legend was altered to read GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX FIDEI DEF . ('George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith'). This second type was issued from 1949 until the conclusion of George VI's reign in 1952.
