After the coronation of King George VI the obverse of the Half Penny series was changed to feature the uncrowned bust of His Majesty facing to the left with the legend GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP (George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). This first type was issued in 1938 and 1939. In 1939 the reverse was changed to feature Kruger Gray's iconic bounding Kangaroo design. This new type was utilised from 1939 until 1948 when India gained independence and the legend was altered to read GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX FIDEI DEF. (George VI, by the grace of god, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith).
