Elizabeth II

1953 - 64

After the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in late 1952, the obverse on the Half Penny series was changed to Mary Gillick's effigy of Her Majesty, with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA ('Elizabeth II, by the grace of god, queen'). This first type was utilised between 1953 and 1955 before the legend was altered to read ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F:D ('Elizabeth II, by the grace of god, queen, defender of the faith'). This second type was issued from 1959 until 1964 and the introduction of decimal currency in Australia. Both types feature Kurger Gray's iconic bounding kangaroo design on the reverse.
